18th Century Cottage Longcase Clock

A small solid oak longcase clock. It has a pagoda shaped hood, with brass side finials, turned hood pillars, a square 12" dial, and a long door with a slim base. The silvered dial is engraved by the maker Ford of Arundel and has fine cut steel hands. It has a 30 hour duration movement that sounds the hours on a bell. ( The duration can be extended to about 3 days if the strike is stopped).
John Ford was born in 1735, married in 1760 and died c 1811.
He is listed as working in 1750 in Arundel, but in January 1755 he was apprenticed to Samuel Burfield clockmaker of Arundel, for 2 years and the fee of £10.
During his working life he is known to have taken at least two apprentices:-
Robert Hardwell, apprentice watchmaker in March 1765, for 7 years and the fee of £5. 5 shillings.
Richard Longhurst, apprentice antique clock and watch maker in June 1766 for 3 years and the fee of £10.00. We have been established since 1978, dealing in and restoring most antiques, specialising in clocks and furniture. We have our own workshops where we carry out specialist restoration work.-
