Description:
A fine quality English late 17th Century antique oak refectory table, incorporating a solid elm top, circa 1680, measuring 6ft 2” long, which seats 8 people, displaying original carvings, stunning colour and in good original condition. The kitchen table boasts a stunning three-plank solid elm top with cleated ends, which is 1¾” thick. It is quite rare to see tables of this age with elm tops (they are usually oak). However, elm displays a more pleasing grain configuration and colour. As this is the original table-top, there is evidence of centuries of historical use and nominal old use marks, which all adds to its character. The table-top can be detached from the base to enable easy access into the house. The antique oak refectory table frame has been constructed in the traditional manner with axe cut rails, with 17th century timbers, with mortise and tenon joints, and then pegged. The table frame boasts a stunning original carved guilloche (a run of overlapping circles) frieze, to all side of the dining table. The antique oak refectory table is raised on turned baluster legs and terminates on block feet, united by four substantial stretchers, for additional strength.
The antique elm table-top displays a stunning colour & stunning grain configuration, having been cleaned and wax-polished in our workshop. The 17th century refectory table comfortably seats 8 people. The antique refectory table is sufficiently tall enough to fit your legs underneath and is sufficiently wide to accommodate serving dishes in the centre of the table (2ft 10⅝” deep). The antique oak kitchen table has been solidly constructed and is of excellent quality – it is extremely heavy! The antique oak refectory table dismantles into two sections (table-top & f base), allowing for easy transport and access into the home through doorways.
This antique oak refectory table would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen to the dining room. It would certainly grace either a traditional or contemporary setting, so don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of history.
Condition Report:
A fine quality English late 17th Century antique oak refectory table, incorporating a solid elm top, circa 1680, measuring 6ft 2” long, which seats 8 people, displaying original carvings, stunning colour and in good original condition. This solid oak farmhouse refectory dining table is in original condition, with exceptional build quality. The table has been cleaned and wax-polished, to a professional standard, in our workshop. As the antique oak refectory table retains its original elm table-top, there is evidence of centuries of historical use and old use marks, which all adds to its character. There is an original old hexagonal section visible at one end of the table-top, which was probably where a knot in the timber was situated (see photos). The elm table-top boasts a fantastic rich brown oak colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The oak kitchen table is solid, with no breaks, damage or loose movements. This antique refectory table is extremely heavy, which is always a sign of good quality.
