14” Fusee Dial Timepiece by C. Shedden 1835 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We present for consideration, this rare and exceptional 14” William IV Regency period fusee dial wall timepiece, by well-documented master antique clock and watchmaker Charles Shedden of 3 George Street, Perth, Scotland, (from where this fine clock would have been crafted).

Born in Perth, c1799, Shedden was a horologist for some 50 years and is described in one of the many articles about him as “…person of enterprise and activity”, referring to the many interests he was involved in over and above his horological profession.

For example, Shedden was admitted into the “Incorporation of Hammermen” in the early 1830’s, (a recognised Merchant Guild that helped to regulate “judge, teach and test”, the activity and development of the trades and craftsmen within Perth) and became ‘Deacon’ of the Guild between 1838-1863, affording him a seat on the Perth Town Council. In 1835 he was also appointed by the Town Council to become ‘Inspector of Weights and Measures’ for the Burgh and in c1850 (for a period of 3 years) he fulfilled the office of ‘Magistrate of the City’. Furthermore, and in addition to these and other public duties, Shedden was entrusted by the Council with, “…keeping in order the public clock and music bells in the tower of St. John's Church.”

Shedden however began his working life as a watch and clock journeyman in London, with lifelong Perthshire friend, Colin Croll, and working under such famous horological partnerships as McCabe and Strachan, at Royal Exchange, London, before returning to his native Perth in Scotland, as a fully qualified horologist c1825.

By 1851 Shedden (now 52), was residing at Barnmill House, High Street, Perth, with wife Elizabeth and five of their children. Interestingly his occupation was listed as “Magistrate of the City, Perth”, as highlighted above. However, by 1861 Shedden had moved again, this time to 4 King's Place, Perth, by which time, he was recorded as a Master watch and clockmaker.

At some stage during the early 1870’s, Shedden had also relocated his business to 38 Princes Street, Perth, from where two of his sons, James, and Cumming, had joined him in the trade. Sadly, Shedden passed away at his Barnmill House residence on 2 August 1878, aged 79, this, following a short period of ill-health.

The antique clocks narrow turned flame Mahogany roundhead face with Mahogany boxed cabinet has pleasing, aged patination. The box has a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and a turn button lock regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clocks original convex metal dial has black Roman numerals with Shedden’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Lance hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by convex glaze mounted in its original lockable brass bezel.

The clock benefits from a high quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between 4mm thick shouldered plates and knopped pillars and comes with a winding key and its brass pendulum with a very rare 70mm diameter disk segmented brass bob, which we believe to be original.
