12” Fusee Dial Timepiece by Benjamin S. Morse, 1886 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We present for consideration, this excellent fusee wall antique clock with 12” dial, by maker Benjamin Samuel Morse of 8 Queen’s Road, Watford, Herts.

Born 1854, at Bradenstoke, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, (his father John, being a Baptist Minister), Morse was one of two clockmaking family brothers, (his older brother Ebenezer remaining in Wiltshire throughout his life). On 21 August 1876, Morse married wife Fanny in Holborn, London and continued his clock and watch making profession from High Street, Pinner, Middlesex.

In c1884, Morse moved away from the centre of London to 8 Queen’s Road, Watford, Herts, (from where this clock would have been made), and by 1901, census returns record that he was living and trading from 136 High Street, Watford (as a watch maker and jeweller), where he remained until his retirement in the 1920’s. Morse passed away on 15 April 1932 in Watford, age 78 and buried at St Pauls Church, Langleybury, Herts. Following his death, the business was run by Morse’s granddaughter and became “Jackson's Jewellers”, which is still run by Morse’s descendants today, in Watford’s town centre.

The antique clocks turned roundhead face and boxed cabinet are made of Oak, with a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and a further operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clocks original metal dial has black Roman numerals and Morse’s details, finished with its original pair of original blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.

The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between rectangular plates with and turned pillars and comes with its original 72mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.

A superbly executed and well-proportioned mid-Victorian wall antique clock, from one of the noted clockmakers of the English Home Counties. Sold with further research.
