Walnut and Brass Book Holder / Desk Set / Inkwells
A rare find, the likes of which I haven't seen every before in the 30 years in this business. The quality is the finest. The bases is made from rich burr Walnut and stands on four lovely brass feet with exquisite cast handles to each side and a matching handle to front of the drawer.
The folding brass bookends are made from heavy cast polished reticulated brass, with a face to the top of each. The base of the bookend screwed to the wood is blessed with an English design registration diamond shaped lozenge which allows us to date it accurately, the registration of this piece being 2nd May 1878.
Quite possible from the Captain's office on a ship, the bookends open and the inkwells on a gimbal pivot out to the sides. Each inkwell have a very British Lion to each side with ring handles and the hinged lid with a flame. Once opened, the original liners are revealed.
Made even special by the drawer below which when opened reveals a writing drawer to accomodate dip pens, nibs, seal and sealing wax. each side has a folding campaign style brass candlestick and to the left is a brass lidded matches compartment, the lid having a strike on the top the opposite side has a natural bristle pen or nib wipe, looking untouched.
A spectaclar showpiece, the like of which you may never see again. An impressive size with a footprint measuring 18" x 7 1/4" and spanning 21" from inkwell to inkwell once the bookends are opened. Simply the best! Excellent condition.
