Silver Plate Toast Rack, James Dixon, c.1920s/30s
This is a smart Silver Plate Four Slice Toast Rack from around the 1920s/30s. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded ends and stands on four bracket feet. The dividers are in the church arch style and the handle is broadly oval in shape. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack is made in Sheffield by James Dixon & Sons and was retailed in Leeds through Zachariah Barraclough & Sons. Founded by James Dixon in around 1806, James Dixon & Sons were renowned silversmiths and electroplaters remaining in business up until the mid-1980s. Z. Barraclough & Sons were well known retailers in Leeds founded in 1805 and continuing on until the early 1950s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expercted with the use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 8.8cm / 3.5ins long, 6.5cm / 2.5ins wide and stands 11.5cm / 4.5ins high. It weighs 139.0g / 4.9oz.
The underside of the base is marked with EP for silver plate, the letters J D & S and the trumpet and banner trademark for James Dixon & Sons Ltd and the retail stamp for Z. Barraclough & Sons, Leeds.
