Rare Fatimid Seljuk Mihrab / Minbar Wooden Roundel %%alt5%%
Very rare ancient Islamic wooden roundel with calligraphic inscription from Mihrab or Minbar c1600 or earlier

This is an elegant, exquisite, highly detailed and intricately carved wooden roundel that is guaranteed to be at least 400 years old from either the Fatimid or Seljuk peiod.

It is simply stunning with absolutely amazing detail! You have to zoom in to really appreciate the wonderful patina and design on this work of art!

A roundel is the term used to refer to a circular applique or piece that should form part of a larger work. The Islamic artesans used roundels in metal work, wood and paintings from the earliest period and throughout the medieval period.

Although this amazing artefact looks to be complete in itself – it is clear from the lack of work around the edge/side and underneath that it was 'slotted' into something larger. However, by itself, it still looks stunning and is an exquisite piece.

You can see obvious signs of age on this beautiful piece of wood such as the various shades in the colour and the age-related splits/cracks. These splits are not damage but naturally occuring patination caused by a living material gradually drying over several centuries.

The inscription is very clear – it is either a benedictory phrase (religious praise of God) or a description about the person who ordered this piece to be made – please remember that this piece was part of something larger (ie mihrab, minbar, door or possibly even a throne).

This delightful and RARE piece of Islamic history measures 5cm in diameter and around 4cm deep. The deep rich colour is very attractive!

Early Islamic wood is highly desirable and you can find pieces in the best museums and when such pieces come up for auction – they achieve very high prices!

Here are some examples of ancient Islamic carved wood pieces that have sold at auction (full details and links available on request):
