Lake District Masterpiece – Edward Horace Thompson

Lake District Masterpiece – Edward Horace Thompson, Thirlmere & Helvellyn, 1925
Subject & Medium
An original watercolour on paper by Edward Horace Thompson (1879–1949), portraying the tranquil Thirlmere reservoir with the dramatic rise of Helvellyn in the background. Painted in 1925, the work is protected under glass, preserving its delicate tonal range and fine detail.
Composition & Technique
Thompson’s painting is a masterclass in atmosphere and balance. The calm surface of the lake shimmers with light reflections, offset by deeper shadows in the water. In the foreground, lush green grasses, blooming purple heather, and a solitary tree lead the viewer’s gaze toward the middle distance. Beyond, rolling hills fade into mist-veiled mountains, their western flanks bathed in soft golden light. Above, a shifting sky blends cloud and clear blue. The harmonious palette of greens, browns, purples, greys, and blues captures both vibrancy and tranquillity.
Signature
Signed by Edward Horace Thompson in the lower corner, confirming authenticity and enhancing the painting’s collectible value.
The Artist
Edward Horace Thompson was born in Seaton, Cumbria, in 1879 and became renowned for his evocative Lake District views. After early employment in a factory office, he dedicated himself to painting full-time, establishing a studio in Cockermouth. His works are now held in private collections across the world, exhibited at Gladstone & Patterson, and sold at reputable auction houses, with examples achieving up to $4,605 USD. Thompson is remembered as one of Cumbria’s most accomplished landscape artists of the early 20th century.
Thirlmere & Helvellyn
Helvellyn is the third-highest mountain in England, famed for its dramatic ridges Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, and immortalised in the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. Thirlmere, once a natural twin lake, was reshaped in the 19th century into a reservoir serving Manchester. Surrounded by fells such as Raven Crag and Armboth Fell, it remains a place of dramatic natural beauty that has inspired walkers, poets, and artists for centuries. Thompson’s watercolour continues this long tradition of celebrating the Lake District’s most iconic landscapes.
Frame
Presented in a newly fitted Larson Julh gilt frame with floral foliage moulding. The work has been mounted to conservation standard and glazed with AR70 museum-quality anti-reflective glass. A hanging thread is fitted to the reverse, making it ready to display.
