Half Hull Model On Copper Mail Sloop Achilles NY
This is a framed Half Hull Model of the sloop Achilles by Whitby Shipwrights, which is backed onto a copper sheet and ismahogany framed. Apart from one other auction listing, we have been unable to discover any information about the makers. The model bears a plaque under the ship which names it Achilles - New York. There is also a brass plaque stating Whitby Shipwrights.
We believe the model to be the fast sloop Achilles, which was built in the New York dockyard and was formerly named Anna Maria and was intended to be a pilot boat. She was renamed Achilles and spent most of her time as a fast mail boat.
As the model is mounted on the copper sheet, the reflection seems to show a whole ship from certain angles. This has made it rather difficult to photograph, however.
It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Frame size: 24 3/8" x 20 1/2" - 62cm x 52cm
Condition: Very good.
