English Derbyshire Pietra Dura Desk Thermometer
This is a fine English Derbyshire pietra dura and black marble desk thermometer, circa 1850. Having an engraved Fahrenheit scale with mercury tube surrounded by a border of inlaid flowers and leaves in various specimen marbles, it stands on a rectangular base and four low square-section feet.
It was produced in Ashford, Derbyshire where an industry thrived from the late 18th to mid 19th century in imitation of the Italian Florentine pietra dura workshops, using both imported and local hardstones. The black marble which is, in fact, a bituminous limestone, was quarried from mines in the Ashford area. Once cut and polished its shiny black surface provide a perfect surface for inlay using decorative stones and minerals. This thermometer is an excellent example of the work from this period.
Dimensions: Height 22 cm x Width 13.5 cm x Depth 7 cm
Weight 1.3 kg
Condition: The thermometer is in working order and the inlay is all present. A small piece of the scale is missing at the tip above the screw, and there are two tiny nibbles on the marble edges, one on the front right corner of the base and the other half way up the left side.
