Superb Early 18th Century Burr Walnut Bureau Bookcase of the George I Period with Wonderful Original Patina
This wonderful bureau bookcase consists of an upper section with moulded cross grain cornice to the dome top leading down to two doors with walnut fielded arched panels with walnut crossbanding supported within an intricate and shaped ebony moulding, the doors with brass escutcheons and one long candle slide below. The doors opening to reveal two adjustable shelves for books etc.
The lower bureau section consisting of a finely figured burr walnut fall with herringbone crossbanding and moulded ebony edge with brass escutcheon and original lock, this opening to reveal a nicely fitted interior consisting of a sliding panel with well below, a central door with pigeon holes and waterfall drawers to either side. The writing surface having a walnut banding with central black leather which has been retained for originality.
This leads down to an arrangement of drawers, the top dummy drawer with a looper to either side to support the fall when open, leading down to two small over two long graduated drawers, the drawer fronts all of burr walnut with herringbone banding, oak linings and brass drop handles and escutcheons, the sides of the front surrounded by ebony mouldings.
The bureau bookcase is supported on a ebony moulding and stands on original ebony bun feet, the sides walnut veneer on oak, the back also of oak boards.
Made in England, circa 1720, this bureau bookcase boasts a rich walnut colour and is in superb original condition.
The figured walnut exhibits a rich, warm patina, perfectly complemented by the exquisite black mouldings. This bureau bookcase is not only a testament to exceptional craftsmanship but also a stunning example of early Georgian design, making it an ideal piece for any refined interior.
