British propaganda copy of Goetz' Lusitania Medal
D.J.MASSEY & SON
This is a British copy of Karl Goetz Medallion depicting the sinking of The Lusitania by a German U-Boat.
Goetz on his original medal got the date wrong using 5 Mai 1915, when The Lusitania was sunk on the 7th. May, he attributed this to the press printing the incorrect date. He subsequently corrected his mistake on further strikes of the medal. The British and Americans produced copies and they were used as propaganda and an aid to recruiting more military personnel.
Goetz produced both bronze and iron medals and copies were generally iron.
This medal is iron and still has a bronze coloured finish.
Unfortunately it doesn’t have the original box or paperwork which accompanied these medals.
