The armchairs mirror the design of the singles, with the addition of two splayed arms, decorated with foliate scroll carvings, secured by shaped vertical supports. This set of chairs has been produced by renowned cabinetmaker Waring and Gillows each chair is stamped on the underside of the frame (see photos).

Provenance:
Gillows of Lancaster and London, also known as Gillow & Co., was a furniture-making firm based in Lancaster, Lancashire, and in London. It was originally established in Lancaster in about 1730 by Robert Gillow (1704-1772). The family owned Gillows until 1814 when it was taken over by Redmayne, Whiteside, and Ferguson they continued to use the Gillow name. Gillows antique furniture was a byword for quality, and other designers used Gillows to manufacture their antique furniture. Gillows furniture is referred to by Jane Austen, Thackeray and the first Lord Lytton, and in one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas. In 1903, Gillows merged with Warings of Liverpool to become Waring and Gillow. They were the largest company of its type outside London where they maintained showrooms and workshops. They had a solid reputation for quality. The company won commissions to furnish and decorate public buildings in Australia, South Africa, India, Russia, Germany, France and the U.S. It provided furniture for aristocratic houses, such as Tatton Hall, where some 150 extant pieces complement the work of the architect Lewis William Wyatt. Details of the commissions can be found in the Pattern Books in the Gillow archives. By 1897, they were over extended and formed an informal partnership with Warings of Liverpool. In 1903 Warings bought them out and the two companies became Waring&Gillows (Source: Wikipedia).

These chairs have been produced in the style of the Chippendale period. The period, from 1755 – 1780, is named for the famous English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, who published a book of furniture designs in 1754, entitled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director. It had a strong influence on the cabinetmakers of the day, which incorporated the styles within the book into the furniture they produced. The Chippendale style contained influences from Roman and Gothic styles, including Gothic arches, Chinese fretwork, columns, capitals, C-scrolls, S-scrolls, ribbons, flowers, leaves, scallop shells, gadrooning and acanthus leaves. Construction predominantly made use of materials such as mahogany, walnut, maple and cherry.

The chairs feature a rich dark brown mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

The chairs would look superb in the dining or boardroom.  They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Condition Report:
These dining chairs are in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frames and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The seats have been newly upholstered therefore the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The upholstery is therefore clean, free from wear and marks. If you do not like the colour/style of the upholstery, we can recover the seats in a fabric of your choice. If you would like the seats recovered, please contact us for a quote. The chairs retain the original polish therefore they boast a fantastic patination and colour, which cannot be recreated if the chairs were re-polished. This is a true set from the day of their construction (they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs). The chairs are solid in joint they do not wobble and they are ready to use.
