19th century Dolphin & Clam Shell Open Salt 19th century Silverplate Dolphin and Clam Shell %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
19th century Dolphin & Clam Shell Open Salt. Dating to the mid to latter part of the 19th century this is a really fine example of an elaborate, also a scarce form of a Maltese dolphin supporting a Clam Shell open table salt. The base is a seabed with fish and other sea creatures, plants etc. This is a silver plated model, with a gilt coating to the inside of the shell.

This is a first quality sculpture, fine details sharply observed keenly executed by a craftsman. (there have been other similar models produced over the years, but they do tend to be of much lesser detail and quality).

There are model and trade mark impressions to the underside. (3641 plus a trade mark of what may be one of the lighthouse forms registered at the time)

Condition: excellent, no damage and no loss of plating, the depth of plate appears to be superior and the addition of gold plating to the inside of the clam shell all underline the highest quality product one that has survived nearly 200 years in first class condition. The gilt lining is the only sign of age, a little thinner than when it was first made.
