William Comyns 1909 Silver & Tortoiseshell Clock English Boudoir clock silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Made for Mappin and Webb by William Comyns a fully working silver and tortoiseshell Boudoir Clock dated to 1909. This is a pedigree timepiece, William Comyns is one of the most prestigious London silversmiths dating back to the 18th century.

Albeit of travelling/carriage dimensions, this diminutive clock is very much the permanent boudoir item. The decoration and lack of carrying handle etc suggests it was not really designed to be transported.

There are four panels of Tortoiseshell (sides, face and top, the first three are flat panels the last is curved.) The face panel is decorated in silver pique plus has an applied/surmount of a ribbon garland with fine detailed and cast foliate swags.

The clock face is white enamel with black Arabic numerals. The Mappin and Webb name is also present in black, the clock hands again in black. The face is behind a slightly convex glass which is retained by a deep-set silver bezel.
The mechanism is a fine quality French eight-day movement with platform escapement.

The silver body frames the tortoiseshell on the sides and face, it has solid up-swept shoulders lifting and accentuating the curved top. The base and rear are solid un-decorated silver, the rear being the access door to the movement.

This is a rare and quite delightful design.

It has full sets of hallmarks and model number to the base and the door is also hallmarked.

Size: Overall the clock stands 10.5 cm high (inc. the ribbon/bow) the splayed legs are 6.8 cm at their widest and 4.7 cm at the deepest. The clock body is slightly smaller. It weighs (unpacked) 347 gms.

Condition: Firstly, this is a fully working clock and keeps perfect time. It has been professionally cared for throughout its life and this is reflected in the condition of the mechanism, the glass, enamel, and tortoiseshell all of which are in excellent undamaged condition (the Mappin and Webb is a little rubbed but perfectly readable) all the hallmarks and model no. A2906 are also in good order. The silver has only one tiny, miniscule ding to the rear door, imperceptible but noted for accuracy. Plus, one of the rear legs has been honestly repaired in the distant past.
