Taxidermy Pike by J Cooper & Son, 1925
An impressively large taxidermy pike by J. Cooper & Son presented well in a naturalistic diorama of reeds, grasses, silt and pebbles and with a turquoise background giving a good impression of a river bed. The case is bow fronted ebonised wood with glazed side panels. The glass front has a gilt border and gilt lettering along the bottom describing the catch as “Caught by T. Hobday, Severn, Wroxeter, January 17th 1925, Wgt 14lbs 4ozs”. There are two metal loops at the top back of the case to aid wall hanging. This magnificent fish will display very well in any setting, making a great talking point for the home and perhaps a good decorative item for a traditional pub or restaurant.
The pike is in good age-related condition and the setting looks nice. The wooden frame has minor small chips out of the front left and the back right vertical supports and there is a vertical crack towards the centre of the back wooden panel, which shows through from the front, but is well disguised by the positioning of the vegetation and not easily visible.
The piece dates to c. 1925 and is taxidermy in a glazed wooden case, originating from England.
Height – 42 cm
Width – 113 cm
Depth – 23 cm
