Roman oil lamp with Leda and the Swan
A Roman North African terracotta oil lamp with grooved ring handle. The discus is decorated with the mythological scene depicting Leda and the swan embracing.
Circa 2nd half of 2nd century AD
Very Fine condition complete and intact details a little worn.
Length 10.5 cms (4.1 ins).

Literature: For a similar lamp cf item 358 Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum Jean Bussiere and Birgitta Lindros Wohl.
Provenance: Madame Suzanne Gozlan then by descent. Mrs. Suzanne Gozlan (1921-2022), Doctor in History and Archaeology, professor at the Ecole Normale d'Instituteurs de Chartres and lecturer at the University of Paris 4 Sorbonne.
In Greek mythology, Leda is the wife of King Tyndareus and queen of Sparta. According to the myth, Zeus, the king of the gods, was captivated by Leda's beauty and appeared before her in the form of a swan. He then either rapes or seduces her and impregnates her. The same night, Leda sleeps with her husband, who also impregnates her. As a result of these two unions, Leda lays two eggs, each containing one set of twins. According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen (of Troy) and Polydeuces, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus. All our items are supplied with an illustrated certificate of authenticity (COA) which will act as as a guarantee that all items are authentic and dated to the period stated.
