Twelve inch dial with twin cherub and crown spandrels, matted centre, silvered chapter ring with half hour markers, the lower engraved Langley Bradley - London.
Subsidiary seconds and date aperture with surrounding engraving.
Five ringed and knopped pillars, with an outside count-wheel striking the hour upon its original large domed bell.
The ebonised case has been polished and a new red silk fitted to the fretwork sound board, bow-fronted glass lenticle, original wavy glass to the hood, standing 205cm high.
Complete with its original large brass cased weights. One weight has had lead added to it in the past as seen in the images above which no doubt was to give it a little more drive, probably at a time prior to it being cleaned and serviced.
The weights can be seen in the image against a traditional 12lb weight from an eight day clock for a size comparison.
As seen in the images the clock is with its original seating board, however this board is heavily split and we fear that it could give way in the future with the two huge 23lb weights attached, so a new board is currently being made by our restorer.
Offered in good order and currently keeping good time.
Langley Bradley:
Loomes notes that Langley Bradley, son of Thomas and Martha was born in 1671. He was apprenticed to Joseph Wise in 1688 and was made free of The Worshipful Company of Clockmaker's in 1695. He was a Company Assistant in 1720 and rose to Master in
1726. In 1696 he married a widow, Ann Wise, his former Master's sister-in-law and had several children.
He worked at the Minute Dial in Fenchurch Street, then Mile End. He was a renowned turret clock maker and 1738 was paid a salary of £100 a year to maintain the clock of St Paul's, a clock he had completed in 1707 which was heavily criticised by a government commission led by Sir Isaac Newton, whose own clockmaker won the right to replace the Bradley piece.
Despite this set back Bradley’s career continued with strength, Wren tried to get him appointed as official clockmaker to Queen Anne, but the Lord Chamberlain’s office blocked the appointment. So when this failed Wren helped the clockmaker win the commission for the new clock at Hampton court.
