Mid19th century twin fusee striking Skeleton clock

A well‑proportioned and finely executed English 8‑day skeleton clock, displaying a chain‑driven twin‑fusee movement with full striking on the hours. The movement is laid out within an elegantly shaped open frame, allowing the entire train—from great wheels through to the escapement—to be viewed in operation. The plates are neatly finished, with well‑cut crossings and a pleasing symmetry typical of mid‑19th‑century English craftsmanship.
The clock strikes the hours on a bell, the hammer and strike train clearly visible, offering an engaging demonstration of the mechanism’s sequence. The fusees retain their original chain, and the wheelwork shows the refined proportions and careful finishing associated with quality workshop production of the period.
The unusual gilt dial finely engraved with Roman numerals and a minute track, complemented by blued steel hands of classic English form. The dial is cleanly executed, providing a crisp contrast against the exposed brass movement behind it.
The whole is mounted on a polished rosewood veneered base, shaped and moulded in the traditional manner, and protected beneath a well‑fitting glass dome, which both enhances the visual presence of the clock and preserves the movement from dust.
An attractive and representative example of the English skeleton clock tradition. Circa 1850.
