Late 17th / Early 18th Century Marquetry Lace box

A highly unusual and beautifully preserved early domestic sewing or lace box, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. The box features an architecturally stepped, moulded lid centered by its original velvet pin cushion, flanked by a broad border of scrolling floral marquetry. The front panel features a matching scrolling foliage frieze. Most notably, the back panel is fully decorated with a charming, naive folk-art motif depicting two opposing birds flanking a central plant tree, rendered in a bold silhouette style.
The interior retains its original rugged, 17th-century utilitarian architecture. It opens on its original hand-forged, wrought iron strap hinges with tapered, rounded tips and square-headed fasteners. The front wall features its original, heavy surface-mounted iron box rim lock. The thick, straight-grained oak carcass shows exceptional patination and original surfaces throughout. Raised on early turned bun feet. A rare survivor combining high-end decorative woodcraft with robust, early ironwork.
Condition: Consistent with age. Superb deep patina to the exterior veneer and interior oak. Minor historic surface wear and small veneer fractures expected for a piece of this era. Complete with original hinges, lock, and feet. I am located atThe Antique Shop Heathfield High Street TN21 8HU
We are open from Tuesday through to Saturday from 10am until 16.00. Later by appointment.
Looking forward to meeting you all.
