Large Egyptian wadj amulet of a papyrus sceptre
A larger than usual Ancient Egyptian pale green faience amulet in the form of a papyrus sceptre with top suspension loop with light encrustations. Supplied with a wood display stand.
Very Fine condition a couple of very minor surface chips to the rim.
Length 6.5 cms (2.55 ins)
Period: Late Dynastic–Hellenistic: Date: 664–30 BC.
Provenance: Formerly private collection of MC (born 14.12.1933) and RC-Burckhardt. (born 10.05.1929), Basel. Subsequently, by descent in the family.
The papyrus was used in the hieroglyphic script for the word 'wadj', meaning green” or “fresh. The amulet was meant to be worn, carried, or offered to a deity in the belief that it will magically bestow a particular power or form of protection. The papyrus as an amulet represented birth and resurrection. All our items are supplied with an illustrated certificate of authenticity (COA) which will act as as a guarantee that all items are authentic and dated to the period stated.
