Gents 1950s Omega wrist watch Omega wristwatch watch %%alt5%%
Gents 1950s Omega wrist watch.

The watch has a 17-jewel calibre 266 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 14,148,992 which dates it back to 1954.

The watch measures 36mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is gold capped which means a generous layer of 14k gold has been applied to the front and sides of the case. It was said that the gold capping was so thick that it could hold its shape when not fitted to the case and apparently the salesman used to carry a sample of just the gold capping to demonstrate how strong it was. If you look closely, there is some wear to the capping where the watch has rubbed against a sleeve.

The case back is stainless steel. It has the Omega logo to the inside, together with the case reference 2792-4SC and the outside has been engraved, ‘Xmas 1956’.

The SC in the case reference means that the watch should have centre seconds, not subsidiary seconds. Therefore we are safe to assume that the movement has been replaced at some stage, possibly a more economical option than a repair at the time. The movement and case are both mid 1950s.

The lens is in good condition.

The signed dial has the applied Omega logo, hands original to the dial and outer minute markers. There is some fairly even freckling across the dial.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
