Carved and Gilded Pier Mirror with Original Plate

A superb and original Regency water gilded pier mirror of very large proportions and retaining its original bevelled plate in excellent condition.
The finely carved frame with laurel wreath and ribbon decoration interspersed with open flower heads. The lower third flanked by classical reeded and stepped columns.
The frieze with central cartouche and twisted laurel festoons below a stepped cornice with egg and dart border and a running band of acanthus leaves.
These motifs were commonly used from the 1800s onwards to celebrate Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar and to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The mirror dates from c. 1820 in our view, but may have been made a decade earlier.
With original backboards and in lovely original condition with only a few old small chips and losses to the extremities of the frame here and there and which do not show.
From a private home and of an unusually large size and extremely heavy, the mirror has previously been fitted with four brass hanging brackets so that it can be attached to a wall but it could also be strung with very strong wire if preferred. These small brass brackets were removed when we took down the mirror but we will re-attach these if required.
This is a top quality Regency mirror of an unusually large size, the plate is thick hand made glass with a hand cut bevel. Some small age related freckles and a little light background foxing which adds to the beauty of the mirror and it gives a very clear and atmospheric deep reflection.
A truly superb example, guaranteed to delight.
Dimensions are:
65.5 inches high, 39.5 inches wide and approximately 3 inches deep max.
The mirror plate dimensions are: 56.5 inches high and 30 inches
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
