Brass button polishing stick.

This simple device was/is used in the armed and other home services to help keep uniforms clean when polishing the buttons and badges ... simply slide the stick under the button and the uniform fabric is protected from spillages of polish. And it provides a firm surface to let you buff away and get that high gleam we so often see on our services' personnel on parade.

Originally lacquered, this example has been polished back to the bare brass.

One side is stamped "Patent no. 116972/17".
It is also stamped with a number which I cannot make out. This is probably the service number of the original owner.

The stick measures approximately 17 cm (6.75") x 5.5 cm (2.25")
