Belgian Bois de Spa or Jolite de Spa Box c. 1840
This is a lovely Belgian Spa box from around the 1840's. The violin-shaped box has an oil painting of the 'Promenade des Artistes a Spa'. Boxes from Spa are known for the quality of decoration. During the 1700's and 1800's Spa was the destination for Europe's aristocracy and very wealthy middle classes. Superior mementos of the holiday were sought after by those visiting. As a result, artists of significant standing across Europe, such as painters, carvers, etc., came to create and sell these mementos.
As for the boxes, specifically, "The (SPA) wares of the first half of the nineteenth century were in the main decorated with paintings which covered the full extent of the tops of boxes. Many of these were of local scenes, buildings and natural features painted in the romantic taste of the day...Although most boxes were still of simple rectangular shape, there was a growing trend towards the reintroduction of the elaborately-shaped forms popular in the mid-eighteenth century." TUNBRIDGE WARE And Related European Decorative Woodwares by Brian Austin.
The interior of the box maintains its original quilted silk, though in the base in the right and left corners, the silk has started to wear.
This is a lovely and highly collectable piece.

7 3/16" x 5 13/16" x 2 7/8"
