Antique Silver Dial Fusee Pocket Watch, 1884. Quality 1884 Open-Faced Silver Dial Fusee Pocket Watch by Robert Marshall of Sleaford Lincolnshire %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A high-quality Victorian open-faced silver fusee pocket watch by watchmaker and jeweller Robert George Marshall, of 14 Market Place, Sleaford, Lincs, where this watch would have been assembled.

Born 1842 in Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincs, Marshall was a celebrated and respected watchmaker of note in the Lincolnshire region, producing “practical, affordable, watches of high order.” In 1881 he was living at 60 Sharpes Passage, Sleaford, and by 1891 had moved to 30 Jermyn Street, where he passed away in 1896, aged just 52. One of his sons, George Robert Marshall, (born 1870), continued the family business into the 20th Century.

Hallmarked Chester 1884, the watch has a silver dial with machine turned Moiré pattern and a subsidiary second’s dial, both with blued hands, raised Gothic style gold numerals, gold garlanded ring, and central hand-crafted gold floral decoration.

The fusee movement has the distinction of having both the Coventry Star Mark and Liverpool Arrows engraved into the backplate, which whilst original, is unique and scarcely seen. The movement also has a silver balance and large ruby end stone.

The case makers were Albert Waterfall & Robert Gravenor (“AW.RG”) of Hertford Terrace, Coventry and the case and movement serial numbers are the same, “11465.” The dust cap maker was Edward Spicer of Earlsdon Terrace, Coventry.
(NB: Engraved into the inside of the case back is the name “J.J. William Dale” - Perhaps a former owner of the watch?)

The watch comes securely packed with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.

Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
