Antique GWC silver trench watch, 1917.
The watch has a 15-jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has been identified as by the General Watch Company, the same movement as Rolex used in their Marconi watches. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover, this inner cover has some unevenness.
The watch measures 33mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the hinged case back for London (import mark), 1917 with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell.
From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.
The watch has a very handsome look with a generously wide bezel. There are general marks and a few small dings to the front but very acceptable for such an early piece. The back of the watch has some unevenness.
The later acrylic lens is in lovely condition.
The two tone dial would originally have had radium paint detail to the numbers and to the hands but this has been removed over the years. There are a few hairline cracks.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
