Antique Georgian Burr Elm Veneered Workbox- c.1820

This is an extraordinary Georgian work box. On initial glance, this box might even possibly look average for the period. Its shape is a common to the Georgian times. The veneer is elm, which is less common, but is still well represented. There is also not a lot of flash to the box, very little is inlaid, no hand painted scenes are are found gracing the lid. So what makes this box so exceptional?
The veneer and for 3 reasons: 1) The veneer used to clad this box is neither a feathered veneer nor a burr, but a combination of both. This his exceptionally rare and difficult to find in nature. 2) This veneer has been masterfully applied, and the pattern flows continuously and seamlessly across the front, sides and top of the box. This is especially difficult to do in tapered boxes such as this one. 3) Achieving this effect requires the maker to carefully plan and cut the veneer from the same section of wood, maintaining orientation and flow. This attention to detail is time-consuming and wasteful (as it requires selecting from the best parts of a veneer sheet), but it visually elevates the piece and signals craftsmanship only seen in high-end Georgian cabinetry.
Key Features:
This fine Georgian box showcases superior craftsmanship, evident in the way the veneer is expertly wrapped around the carcass and features:
Seamless Grain Matching – Wood grain flows elegantly around corners and across panels, reflecting the maker’s skill and attention to detail.
Precision-Cut Veneer Joints – Mitered edges and perfectly aligned seams indicate a high standard of traditional cabinetmaking.
Curved & Shaped Veneering – Difficult contours are smoothly veneered without lifting or cracking—a true sign of quality.
Tight, Flush Finishing – No gaps or bubbles just a clean, polished surface that enhances the box’s beauty and durability.
Decorative Inlay & Banding – Fine stringing and edgework are flawlessly integrated into the veneer design.
For Collectors:
This is not just a decorative piece, it’s a collector-grade example of Georgian artistry. This box represents Georgian craftsmanship at its finest, perfect for serious collectors of fine woodwork, early veneered boxes, or Georgian decorative arts.
