Antique English silver 'The Strand' pocket watch
Antique English Errington silver 'The Strand' pocket watch.
The watch has an English stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed S Smith & Son, The “Strand Watch”, English made. Watchmakers to the Admiralty, 9 Strand, London. together with the name, 'The Strand'. S Smith & Son were one of the largest retailers of precision and technical pocket watches of the period, they offered several variations based on London related names, eg, The Charing.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Chester 1895, with a sponsor’s mark for Samuel Smith, jeweller based in The Strand, London, and a maker’s mark for Charles Errington of the Errington Watch Company.
The Errington Watch Company was established in Coventry in the 1880s and Errington's aim was to compete with Swiss imports. The company was taken over by Henry Williamson the very year this particular watch was made. However, Errington remained at the company, in the role of Manager, until he retired in 1910, and was regarded as one of the most successful Coventry based manufacturers of watches.
The glass lens is in lovely condition.
The dial is signed with the name of the original retailer of the watch, S Smith & Son Ltd, together with the number 82-47 which can also be found on the movement. Pin-set hands, one of the hands is a period replacement.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE.
