18th Century Grandfather Clock by William Taylor
A piece from the Andrew Hall collection of longcase clocks, this high quality William Taylor example from Whitehaven in the north of England dates to the 18th century. The mahogany case and attractive cross banding are paired with excellent dials, the style of this clock closely resembling that of Jonas Barber from Westmorland, by far the most famous clockmaker from the region. Whitehaven is coastal and there is a useful tidal marker above the rolling moon dial at the top, a date hand at the centre providing a further interesting detail, an 8-day movement and a bell strike on the hour. These features are combined with the omission of a second hand, which was a common characteristic of clocks from the skilled makers in this part of England. 18th century clocks from this area were prized to the extent that they were often found in Manchester which over 100 miles to the south.
Dating to circa 1780, the case of this clock is mahogany and it originates from Cumbria in England.
