1880 French Made Carriage Timepiece With Case
We present for consideration, this wonderful French made brass framed carriage timepiece by Richard & Co. with 5 x bevelled glass panels. It has a white enamelled dial set with Roman numerals and finished with its original pair of blued Paris spade hands. The case sits on a firm brass corniche plinth and has a shaped brass carry handle and comes with its original rouge diced Morocco leather travel case.
The highly reputable clockmaking firm of Richard et Cie., commenced life in Paris, 1848, adding a London based sales and market operation to their portfolio in 1867 at 24 Cannon Street, London in 1867. This branch operated under the English translated name of ‘Richard & Co.’ (abbreviated to R&Co., or R&C), and this clock would have been one of their leading range of carriage clocks made at the Rue Bondy factory in Paris and exported to London specifically for the English market. The company closed their London offices in 1881 but continued to operate in Paris until the outbreak of WWI.
The clocks quality 8-day, R & Co. rear winding, movement is driven by a jewelled, high performance platform escapement mechanism, visible through the clocks top glass tablet. The backplate has the company logo and “Made in France” stamped onto it and is accessed via the clocks rear swing door and comes with a brass winding key.
