1835 English Fusee Timepiece by William Windle.
We offer for consideration, this superb fusee drop dial timepiece from the late Regency period, by master clockmaker William Windle of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham.
Windle was born in Yorkshire in 1807 and is recorded as being a watch and clockmaker, jeweller, and silversmith, and worked from 69 High Street, Stockton, passing away in 1863. The clock is in immaculate condition and excellent working order.
The beautifully hand-crafted cabinet work incorporates a scarce but visually effective combination of solid light Walnut roundhead turned face over a dark veneered Mahogany drop box, the box being rendered with brass stringing intarsia, together with further brass embellishment surrounding its creatively shaped front visible pendulum glazed aperture. The case exhibits excellent patination and retains its original finely hand-carved fan shaped side-ears and side inspection door, with a turn button locking hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box.
The original metal dial has black painted Roman numerals and W. Windle, Stockton, signature, finished with its pair of blued Spade hands secured with a pinned collet. The clocks face is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in its solid brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a fully functional 8-day single fusee driven movement with shouldered plates and knopped pillars, complete with its original brass pendulum rod and bob.
During its 180+ years of existence, this magnificent clock has clearly been well-looked after and cared for given its impeccable overall condition. It really is an outstanding early 19th Century English crafted timepiece!
