Study of a Male Face
Gwen May

Drawings and Etchings

A wonderfully detailed study of a mans head in pencil by this well known artist, it is a beautifully observed piece. Drawn barely 5 years after the end of the First World War one must wonder at what experiences this sitter has had. This drawing is one of 8 in a folio of recently discovered life drawings by the artist, all of which date from the 1920's and the subjects just exude the character and style of the Roaring Twenties in their faces, hairstyles and poses.

ARTIST INFORMATION
The highly accomplished drawings and etchings of Gwen May are seldom found today. Her subjects range from views of Holland Park Mews to deeply rural subjects such as Milking Shed and life drawings. Aside from her few London views, she is known to have worked extensively in and around the areas of Stratford-upon-Avon and Mousehole in Cornwall she also travelled to Spain and Portugal in search of subjects for her plates. Gwen May was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and an accomplished wood engraver and watercolourist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy regularly in the pre-war years. A commemorative award for etching and engraving named after Gwen May is presented every year at the National Print Exhibition.
