Description

A rare and very special antique Teifi Coracle.
This beautiful little boat is a true Welsh Icon and has a wonderful history. Purchased by ourselves directly from the family of the original owners who lived in Cilgerran North Pembrokeshire on the banks of the famous river Teifi just a stones throw from Cilgerran Castle.
Coracles are used in pairs with a net between to fish for Salmon and Sea Trout. The number painted on the side indicating the fishing beat to which the coracle was entitled to fish.
This coracle was made by one of the last 'great traditional' makers Mr John Christmas Thomas of Cenarth in the late 1950's, his workshop is now the home of the National Coracle Museum. He is renowned for the superior quality of his coracles and for them being amongst the very last to be made in the traditional way with materials and methods in which they had been for decades previously.
This coracle is nice and strong but has suffered some worm damage to the outer ring of twisted willow meaning that it would not be suitable for use as a watercraft without restoration to this part. we can however put you in touch with a current coracle maker who has assessed the work and is happy to undertake it should you wish.
We have full provenance and further images and family history with this boat that we will happily pass on to the new owner.
Wonderfully decorative and a real talking point and true piece of Welsh history. The nature of the bitumen covered calico skin mean that it would be suited to an outdoor position as the bitumen tar has a pleasant but strong odour.
Due to coracle licences being reduced to record low numbers and most likely soon to be phased out all together this is a very rare opportunity that may not arise again.
The story of John "Jack" Christmas a Master Coracle Maker is well known and recorded with some historic videos online and much information available in the National Coracle Museum.
