Description

A Royal Charter under the Great Seal of Charles II dated 9th June 1671 in the presence of John Leslie, Earl of Rothes and Marguis of Bambreich and John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale and other Nobles in Favour of John Wauchope of Edmonston, of the Lands of Edmondston, described as the Towns and Lands of Edmonstour, called the Mains of Edmondstour and the Lands of Caldcoitties, lying in the Regality of Mussilburgh of the Sherifdon of Edinburgh.
Hand written in Latin onto Vellum (46 lines), with the Fine Initial Letter of Charles II. Has about half of the Great Seal of Charles II attached.

John Wauchope, Lord Edmonston (1633-1709) was a Scottish Law Lord and held office of Lord of Session between 1672-1688. His wife was Anne Rait, who is mentioned in the Charter.

Lord John Leslie and Bambreich, 7th Earl of Rothes and 1st Duke of Rothes (1630-1681), was made Lord High Treasurer of Scotland and Chancellor of Scotland from 1667-1681. In 1680 was made Lord Auchmotie and Caskieberry, Viscount Lugtour, Earl of Leslie, Marquis of Bambreich and Duke of Rothes and was Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland. He married Anne Crawford Lindsay and resided at the Palace of Leslie, in Fife. His family descends from Princess Beatrix, sister of King Malcolm III of Scotland. His family inter married into both the House of Stuart and Bruce.

John Maitland, 2nd Earl and 1st Duke of Lauderdale and 3rd
Lord Thirlestane (1616-1682). He was a Scottish Minister and leader of the Cabal Ministry. He descended from an ancient Scottish family of both Berwickshire and East Lothian. He resided at Ham House and was married to Lady Anne Home and later to Lady Elizabeth Murray.
