Description

This interesting late 19th-century tea caddy originates from the China Canton region where this type of workmanship was a speciality. It is made from a large trunk section of bamboo using the natural hollow to form the interior which is lead-lined for keeping the tea fresh. There is also an internal separate lid which is also lead-lined. The exterior has a fabulous selection of carved panels in deep relief some showing typical scenes with people amongst trees with temples and pagodas with alternate ones showing exotic birds. The lid is hinged in brass as is the original curved lock which is fitted with a diamond-shaped brass escutcheon. This caddy is in good original condition with fine rich colour and patination.
