Description

This very well modelled and highly detailed model ship diorama within an early spirit bottle dates to circa 1920. It remarkably portrays an early 19th century three masked fully rigged wooden sailing ship at a harbour in a Mediterranean port with buildings, church, lighthouse and palm trees all hand sculpted and modelled in clay and timber with a hand painted finish. Displayed on a simple separate wooden plinth scalloped to locate the bottle. These most collectable pieces can be described as folk art and were often made at sea by sailors with spare time to fill when not working on deck.
