Good Pair of Victorian Silver & Cut Glass Scent Bo
Description
This is a rare early pair of Victorian scent bottles by the renowned John Newton Mappin who founded the business Mappin & company in 1860. The pair have very attractive repousse silver decoration fully hallmarked for London 1893 with the makers mark J. N. M. The silver work features nice detail and both are attractively engraved with the monogram C M to the top. These both are with their original glass stoppers still present inside and the cut glass bottles are in excellent condition with no damage. They are substantial in size measuring 15 cms in height and 7 cms square.
The company Mappin & Webb traces its origins to 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield a major centre of the English silver trade. The business eventually became Mappin Brothers. One of Jonathan Mappins great-grandsons, John Mappin, started his own business in London, Mappin & Company, in 1860, which became Mappin, Webb & Co. in 1862 after John Mappin was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb. The first Mappin & Webb store opened in 1860 at 77–78 Oxford Street London, and the company's candelabra fine silverware and vanity products like these fine scent bottles swiftly gained renown. As a natural progression from silverware, Mappin & Webb began designing jewellery. Mappin, Webb & Co. acquired Mappin Brothers in 1903.
Patrons have included Queen of France Marie-Antonette the Empress of Russia, and Princess Grace of Monaco The company historically held Royal Warrants to both the Russian Empire and the Japanese Royal Household. Queen Victoria was the first British monarch to commission Mappin & Webb in 1888.
Mappin & Webb produced the original Ryder Cup trophy, and made trophies for the Royal Ascot horse races for 75 years.
