Description

This is a very fine 19th century sampler by Elizabeth James aged 12 and dated 1836. The sampler is beautifully executed with fine needlework and features many interesting images, with a central verse above a stone cottage with white railings and chequer board style garden, other decorative motifs include birds, stags, crowns, cats, stars, dogs, baskets of flowers and flowering trees within a floral border and framed neatly in a good gilt frame.
This is one of three good samplers by children of the James family, (Elizabeth here aged 12, Margaret aged 14 in 1844 and one by Ann James aged 12 in 1839) that we have recently acquired.
You can identify several recurring designs between the three and all are embroidered in the same naturalistic colour palette.
This sampler is in excellent condition overall with no damage or repair.

The sampler measures 61 cms by 39 cms overall including the frame.

UK delivery is £20.
