Description

This is a good 19th century needlework embroidered sampler by Rhoda Fortune completed in the year 1893. The proficient work has an alphabet above the family names and the place of Morton on Swale which is a large village and civil parish in Hambleton North Yorkshire. The work has numerous religious texts and God is Love centrally above trees and animals. Adam and Eve and the serpent are depicted on the left with the tree of knowledge. The embroidery and cloth are in good sound order overall, there is a small watermark on the left, half way up the left side of the tree as photographed. It may be possible to clean and remove this but it is not really that obvious and doesn't detract really. The work is still in its original solid oak frame with inner gilt slip and measures 64 cms by 59 cms overall including the frame.
