Description

A truly fine example of a Scottish solid / sterling silver magnifying glass within it's original presentation case.

All original with a "bamboo" handle marked at the top with the Queen Victoria's head duty mark and the mark for the Edinburgh assay office. This example is also lucky enough to have an English design registration number (33139) for the year 1885.

The attractive pierced or reticulated frame around the glass has a lovely set of hallmarks for Edinburgh 1887 together with the Queen Victoria's head duty mark and the makers mark for James Crichton of George Street, Edinburgh.

The case has clearly done a wonderful job protecting this piece and has surface wear and tear. The interior lined in velvet and silk, the silk gold printed " James Crichton & Compy. / Goldsmiths / 47 George St., Edinburgh.

The lens is in superb clear condition without damage with a good magnification.

A true heirloom quality desk accessory measuring 7 1/2" x 3 3/4" x 1/2". The case measuring 9" x 5" x 1".
