Description

A stunning and highly decorative example of a miniature Tantalus created with travel size decanters, providing a decent tot in each. These were also popular to be used as for the secure keeping of expensive perfumes, being able to be locked away from the household staff. Usually only found with three bottles, we were particularly excited to uncover this rare four bottle example.

The bottles are made from top-notch crystal with intricate and deep hand-cutting in the ever popular hobnail design ... all in excellent condition, the heavy cut stoppers reflect the light like large diamonds.

The frame is made of brass and lavishly covered in gold, made by the quality manufacturer Betjemann's and is marked Betjemann's Patent, London. The handle, rope detail and the very regal original monogram and armorial crest are in silver plate, an attractive combination. Clearly this was an expensive piece in it's day and owned by a noble family.

The Tantalus comes with a working key (with a push and turn action) releasing the top bar to moved and allowing the bottles to be removed.

Excellent condition with a footprint measuring 12 1/2" x 5" x 8 1/4 tall to top of handle. Each bottle has a diameter measuring 2" and standing 5" tall.
