Description

A superb pair of antique English letter scales by the most famous of makers, Sampson Mordan & Co. of London, they are signed across the balance.

The quality is top notch to be expected by this esteemed maker, with thick heavy gauge brass having been re-polished to gleam. The base is made from solid Mahogany supported by it's original four small turned feet. The front is where the wonderful set of solid brass weights sit.

The letter pan is engraved with the current postal rates at the time, this allows us to date the scale fairly accurately as these rates were introduced in 1885 until 1897, making this a true Victorian pair. This pan is also engraved by the London retailer, Partridge and Cooper, 192, Fleet Street, described as Manufacturing Stationers and Printers.

The weight pan is also engraved with the postal rates for books.

A lovely top notch example in excellent condition. 10 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 5" tall.
