Description

Floor standing decorative adjustable metal stand with mahogany rest. The bone makers label reads "JOHN CARTER LITERARY MACHINE 6A NEW CAVENDISH ST Portland Place, LONDON. It stands on a flat cast iron base that shows remnants of the original paint finish. The wooden central column is spirally carved and painted a dark red with gilded bands. The book rest pivots on the stand with an ingenious ball and socket mechanism that also has some of its original gilding.
