Description

A quite superb Edwardian bookcase in the Chippendale taste, in extremely good quality mahogany and of pleasingly slim proportions, making it eminently suitable for use in an alcove. The upper section features a wonderfully carved over-hung cornice above two seven-pane astragal glazed doors opening to reveal an arrangement of three adjustable shelves. The base section features a rosette carved apron above two similar doors, opening to reveal an arrangement of two adjustable shelves, and is raised on plinth base formed with ogee bracket feet, all with quite exceptional quality carving. Bears maker’s stamp to the top of the base section ‘Holland & Sons Ltd, Mount St, London’.

Although designed as a bookcase this item could equally be used as a display cabinet should the client require, we would be happy to put a fabric lining on the inside of the back panel to facilitate this.

About Holland & Sons
Originally founded in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland, the firm of Holland & Sons soon became one of the largest and most successful furniture making companies in the 19th Century. The firm worked extensively for the Royal Family, being granted the Royal Warrant early in the reign of Queen Victoria, hence taking a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House, Sandringham, Balmoral, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House. Holland and Sons also worked extensively for the British Government, for whom they executed over three hundred separate commissions, including the Palace of Westminster, the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Always at the forefront of fashion, Holland & Sons employed some of England’s leading designers and participated in all of the International Exhibitions of 1851, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1872 and 1878.

Condition and Details of Restoration
This item is in original structural condition and is completely sound. The polish has been revived, by our own craftsmen, by hand in the traditional manner. Some of the glazing has been replaced.There are minor old marks underneath the polish, which is attractively faded in places on the sides.
