Description

A handsome Damascus ware lamp in the Mamluk revival style, sometimes referred to as ‘Cairo-ware’, this has a body of brass applied with silver and copper and is ornamented with designs and script in the Near Eastern style of the 13th and 14th centuries. This type of ware had a revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when people from around the world took a renewed interest in the period. This has no electrical attachments, but there is a hole in the base where a wire can be run through the hollow centre, and a turned brass terminal which can be unscrewed from the base and which has a screw thread at the top so that a lamp holder can be attached. Functional and durable, this is a highly decorative piece.

Dating to circa 1920, this is made of brass, copper and silver, and originates from Syria.

In generally good age-related condition.
