A Fusee, Drop-Dial Wall Clock with a Wooden Dial

Description
A lovely example of a classic Regency Period drop-dial clock. The 8 day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, shouldered plates and long pendulum.
Fixed to a bridge plate behind a 12" diameter, convex wooden dial that is separate to the surround (this is very rare and dates the clock accurately). Having outer, Arabic 5's, a divided minute track with triangular hour marks, Roman hour numerals and above centre is the maker's name "LEVY (of the) Strand" and below the winding hole - the city "LONDON". The hands are matching 'spade' style and are blued steel. The dial is behind a polished, cast brass, hinged bezel with a high dome, convex glass.
Contained in a dark mahogany 'drop' or 'trunk' case. The 3-piece pegged-on dial surround has a well executed, cushion shape moulded edge. The trunk or back box has hinged and toggled access doors to both sides and it is flanked with carved fan shaped 'ears' below the dial surround. The front has sycamore roundels and stringing inlay over a 3-sided moulding that breaks it from the quarter rounded, back-to-the-wall bottom that has a curved, cockbeaded and locking regulation door also, conforming roundels and stringing.
No specific maker can be found at this address however, sometimes makers advertised from 'The Strand' because at the time, it was the most exclusive shopping area in London! This is a very attractive example of a Regency period wall clock that is in amazing original condition - a rarity in itself, a truly 'good find'.

Dimensions21 3/4" high x 14 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" deep to the glass high point.
ConditionThe movement is working very well with an excellent action to the escapement. It does appear to have been in full use for the 200 years of its life because there is evidence of extensive, ongoing maintenance. It is very clean, but the brass is stained giving the appearance that it may be dirty, this is purely cosmetic and would be corrected during an overhaul. The wooden dial is superb and retains its original, intact base paint that shows very fine age cracks. There is a minor touched-up area of damage visible just above the "N" in "LONDON" and also at the "V" position but this can be greatly improved if the purchaser wishes however, it is not considered detrimental to the appearance considering its age. The bezel is also superb, it is polished, lacquered and the glass has been re-seated with fresh plaster (it breaks away in time). The case too is superb. It is French polished to a high standard and retains its original, fully working door lock in fact, the whole clock seems to be completely original with nothing replaced.
