English Fusee Drop Dial in a Walnut Case

Description

A pale walnut cased, fusee drop-dial wall timepiece by Thomas Sly of Salisbury. Circa 1870.

The 8 day duration, 4 pillar, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and long pendulum with a substantial brass-cased lenticular pendulum bob.

Behind a 12" diameter, flat painted iron dial with outer divided minute track and inner, Roman hour numerals. The centre bears the maker's signature of "THO(MA)S SLY. SALISBURY". Also having spade shaped blued steel hands and a hinged and glazed bezel.

Contained in a faded walnut veneered case of good grain. The dial surround being flat and over the drop box front that is inlaid with brass stringing and roundels. It also has a glazed pendulum aperture with cast brass quarter framing. This is flanked with carved scrolled ears and the curved bottom has a locking and cockbeaded regulation door. There is also a side access door.

Thomas Sly of Salisbury worked from 1859 until 1875 and was based at 52, Blue Boar Row.

Provenance: Part-exchanged from a local lady that we sold it to 25 years ago.
Date19th Century : 1870 Dimensions20" high x 14 1/2" wide x 5 1/2" deep. ConditionThe dial is good with small age cracks to the base paint. The case is faded but excellent and in sound condition.
