Curiosity map of Europe as Queen, by Munster.by Sebastian Munster (Muenster) (1488 - 1552) from 'Cosmographia, das ist Beschreibung der Gantzen Welt,...' published in Basle, c1578, German edition.
wood engraving overall size 34 x 21 cm image size 25,5 x 16 cm. On verso German text with high-lightened capitals. Modern hand colouring. paper thin, evenly browned, in places stained, thumbed, occ. foxed edges slightly frayed with some tiny marginal tears not affecting image 1 small marginal hole lower margin some paper impurity but not obvious o/w vg cond.
Munster's Cosmographia is the earliest German description of the world with numerous editions in different languages the last German edition was published in 1628, long after his death. - The Cosmographia was one of the most important and successful books in the 16th century, with numerous single and double paged maps and topographical views as well as engravings of costumes, personages, animals, flowers and mythical beasts.
Munster's maps are a staple edition to any map collection!
