ornate gilded wooden frame with reddish gesso shining through and a cream coloured museums-quality mount with a gold and black line.

One of the most iconic antique views of London, printed on two sheets and joined in the middle, engraved and published by Matthaeus Merian, from 'Theatrum Europaeum...', Frankfurt, c1650.

Merian the Elder (1593 - 1650)was a Swiss-born engraver and publisher who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career. He produced a 21-volume set of town plans and views as well as maps of most countries, including a world map. - This panorama view shows London before the Great Fire in 1666, with 43 point keys. Please note the heads on pikes at the South end of London Bridge - not for the faint-hearted!

A priced addition to any collection that will look great over a fireplace or in a study.
